S-tines are a versatile and essential component in modern mechanical cultivation and weed management systems. Named for their distinctive “S” shaped spring steel design, these flexible tines provide effective shallow soil disturbance, loosening, and weed control while preserving soil structure and minimizing crop damage.
Constructed from durable spring steel, S-tines flex as they move through the soil, allowing them to absorb shocks and maintain consistent contact with the ground. This flexibility ensures a smooth, efficient operation even in uneven or rocky fields. At the working end, S-tines are typically fitted with interchangeable blades, such as shovels, sweeps, or knives, allowing customization for different soil types, weed pressures, and crop row spacing. S-tines can also be used to cut furrows for transplanting, as we have done with leafy greens and onions.
The primary function of S-tines is to cultivate the top 1 to 3 inches of soil, uprooting young weeds and breaking up surface crusts that can impede seedling emergence. Their ability to work between or beside crop rows makes them ideal to use in tandem with other implements such as basket weeders or finger weeders. One can simply unbolt them from their implement rack, and add them to another one.
