First Harvest!

This week we had our first harvest! We cleaned out our radish beds which in the end produced very few radishes. These were the first beds we seeded (EVER) with the new planter adapted to our tractor’s system. Once the radishes germinated, we realized we hadn’t ironed out all of the kinks. We think we got two things wrong: (1) we had the settings too deep, so we essentially buried the seed, and (2) we aren’t convinced that the hopper was dropping all of our seeds. Subsequent seeding has been much more successful!

We are partnering with the Waterloo Region Foodbank, with the intention of donating the produce that we grow. These folks have been really enthusiastic and supportive of our project. In the spring, Leanne and Kim met with the Foodbank and had a tour of the facilities. Some time in the next few weeks Nicole and some of the volunteers will come and visit our project.
Dropping off the first bin of radishes (however small the harvest) was really rewarding. Folks at the Foodbank were so positive and enthusiastic.
